It is a busy Saturday night at the shisha lounge, and you can hear the beats from the DJ favorites. The last customers are finishing up their bowls, and the break down crew is ready for their shift. Reasons for Stuck Bearings in Purge Valves
Understanding the problem is the first step in finding a solution. Modern hookah purge valves incorporate a simple but credible design. They incorporate a ball bearing which is commonly made of glass, stainless steel or plastic and is situated in a cylindrical housing. The ball bearing moves upwards when the purge button is pressed, or air is blown into the tubos para cachimbas, creating pressure differential. This allows old smoke in the chamber to exit via the purge port. The system is sealed when the ball bearing is seated back in the housing.
There are three primary causes of sticking purge valves.
- Saliva. Every hookah user adds their own unique moisture into the hose. Although it may not be immediately evident in the hose, it will eventually be noticeable in the purge valve. Saliva contains many components which leave a residue as it evaporates.
- Varnish. Modern hookah tobacco is predominantly made of a glycerol and a glycol polymer base, which creates a sticky mixture. This smoke when cooled creates a coating that, with time, loses its stickiness and forms a varnish.

. The purge button has resistance. An operative purge button should require very little effort to be pressed. If the purge button requires effort, this means that residue has built up inside.
. Air can be heard or felt through the purge port, which means the purge valve is not sealing.
. Smoke is not being ejected purge. Resistance in the hose creates an obstruction in the purge valve.
. Bubbling in the base is slow. A purge should create an air vent to the base water, but slow movement of water means that there is an obstruction in the purge valve.
. The bearing is visibly dirty. If the purge valve is not clear, it is likely that the purge valve and bearing are dirty.
Cleaning a dirty hookah purge valve takes three minutes, but if it is ignored, the entire process to deep clean the purge valve assembly may take up to an hour.
Tools and Materials You Will Need
To maintain lounges, stock your cleaning station setup with the following items:
- – Isopropyl alcohol 91% or higher. The best solvent for the buildup of glycerin and resin. Alcohol of lower concentrations contains too much water and evaporate much slower.
- – A small container or shot glass. Use to soak the ball bearing and the small valve components.
- – Pipe cleaners or thin nylon brushes. Regular hookah stem brushes are too oversized for the purge valve housings. Thin nylon brushes or a pipe cleaner is the appropriate size.
- – Microfiber cloth or lint-free wipes. Use to polish and dry the ball bearing.
- – Tweezers or small forceps. Ball bearings are small, easy to drop, and tweezers will allow you to maintain control.
- – (Optional) Compressed air. Good for blowing out debris from hard to reach parts of the valve housing.
- – (Optional) Food-grade silicone grease. The application of a micro-thin layer on the bearing after a deep clean will help maintain the bearing’s smooth movement.

Step-by-Step Deep-Cleaning Guide
Step 1: Disassemble the Purge Valve
Find the purge valve assembly on your hookah. It is normally located at the top of the stem, and is usually positioned opposite of the hose port, or is integrated with the main body. The valve assembly has an outer cap, a spring or button mechanism (if present), a ball bearing, and a retaining ring or seat.
Unfasten or carefully remove the outer cap. Take apart the pieces and organize them in the order you plan to reassemble them in. If this is the first time disassembling the model, before removing anything, you can photograph the purge valve to see any differences as the designs vary from one brand to another.
Step 2: Take Out the Ball Bearing
With tweezers, take the bearing out from its housing. If the bearing is stuck and you can’t take it out, do not use any tools that are made out of metal to remove the bearing; you can scratch the surface of the bearing. You can use isopropyl alcohol and place several drops to the bearing; after one minute, the alcohol would penetrate the residue and loosen the hold of the residue. At that moment, you can use tweezers to rock the bearing until it releases.
If the bearing is still stuck after isopropyl alcohol treatment, you can place the valve housing in warm water (not boiling) for several minutes as the warm water makes the valve housing expand and can break the hold.
Step 3: The Components will be Soaked in Isopropyl Alcohol
After you take the retaining ring and any springs or buttons, you can use isopropyl alcohol for soaking (you can place 91% isopropyl alcohol). You can let these sit for five to ten minutes at most; if there is heavy residue present, you can wait for several minutes.
While you wait to clean the valve housing, you can do other cleaning.
Step 4: Clean The Valve Housing
Take a thin brush or a pipe cleaner and dip it in isopropyl alcohol. Put it inside the valve housing and rotate it in a circle. Pay attention to:
- – The seat where the ball bearing rests (the sealing surface)
- – The cylindrical chamber walls
- – The purge port opening where air exits
Replace the pipe cleaner with a new one if it gets dirty. Do this step until the pipe cleaner comes out clean. Shine a flashlight inside the housing to check if there are any leftover film.
If your hookah has a removable purge valve housing (which is common for premium stainless steel models) completely remove the housing and submerge it directly in isopropyl alcohol for a thorough cleaning.
Step 5: Clean The Ball Bearing
After submerging, take the ball bearing out of the isopropyl alcohol. Check to see if the surface of the ball bearing is smooth and reflective. If the ball bearing is pitted or scratched, it needs to be replaced.
Gently rub the ball bearing with a drop of isopropyl alcohol on a lint free cloth. Do not use abrasive pads or metal brushes, as they will scratch the surface of the ball bearing and create rough spots.
If your ball bearing is glass, please be extra careful. Glass is harder than plastics and is also more brittle. Glass ball bearings can develop small micro-cracks that are not visible to the eyes and will cause the ball bearing to seize again.
Step 6: Rinse & Dry
Use some warm water to rinse the housing and ball bearings. While most of the alcohol will evaporate in the housing, some of the cleaning contaminants can remain on the surfaces without a rinse.
Please dry everything with a microfiber cloth. Especially for ball bearings, any remaining water can help trap dirt. Compress some air to evaporate any remaining water. You can spray it into the purge port to help reach any water that may remain in the valve housing.
Step 7: Put it Back Together and Check
The ball bearing should be able to roll freely within the housing. Once you are sure it is able to do this, put the retaining ring back on and place the spring and caps back in the order which you removed them.
You can check if the valve works by doing the following:
- Cover the bowl port with your palm.
- Inhale from the hose. You should be able to feel your inhalation.
- Exhale. You will be able to hear air escaping from the valve.
- Remove your mouth off the hose. You should hear a soft clicking noise indicating the valve is closing.
If the valve is not sealing correctly, you should check the size of the ball bearing. If the ball bearing is smaller than the housing, it will rattle and leak. If the ball bearing is larger than the housing, it will stick.
Preventive Maintenance Schedule
A well-known fact is that preventive measures save time and money in the long run. To keep the valves from becoming sticky (which usually results in one-way valves becoming two-way valves), here is what we recommend that you incorporate into your lounge maintenance schedule.
Daily (at the end of every shift): After every single shift, clean the hookah stem and blow compressed air through the valves from the purge port and hose connector. This will displace moisture from the valve and prevent it from drying and hardening.
Weekly: Remove the purge valve cap and inspect the ball bearing. If there is any discoloration/tackiness present, you can wipe the bearing with a pipe cleaner with some rubbing alcohol to slightly remove the bearing. This will prevent your bearing from seizing.
Monthly: Schedule a full hookah deep-clean for your inventory during your slowest business hours. It usually takes one person to rotate an inventory of thirty hookahs in about twenty minutes.
Quarterly: change out the purge valve assembly O-rings and ball bearings. The bearings are cheap and allow for a fully replenished valve that seals perfectly and will not allow micro scratches to transfer to the inner surface.
