This guide explains how color matching works for each material in a hookah set, defining limits of what is possible and how to get the closest result. For anyone who sources hookah products, this information saves time, samples, and rework.
Why Color Consistency Matters in B2B Hookah Orders
Retail buyers compare your products against clashing hookahs for sale in their shops. Irrespective of build quality, a mismatched set appears cheap. A stem, hose, bowl, and bases para cachimbas that do not share a coherent color hurt your brand.

PVD can achieve roughly 10 to 15 colors, which include black, gold, rose gold, gunmetal, bronze, dark blue, gray, champagne, silver, and copper. If a factory has more colors than these, they are likely simply using a stock cathode.
Unlike regular paint, the color is not achieved through the use of pigments or a dye. Instead, the color is achieved through a specific metal and a thicker layer of the deposited film. Color is not achievable through paint; therefore, all coloring needs to be done by the factory.
Packaging a PVD color specification is tricky. Factories provide physical color samples, which are small metal samples that have undergone the actual PVD process. These color samples are how you select a color. Expecting to achieve a near-perfect Pantone color through a PVD coating is unrealistic, and likely, the factory will not even entertain the request.
The chips replicate the grade of steel and the surface finish of your parts. Apart from the finishing and polishing degrees, a PVD color on a brushed surface is different from that on a polished surface. The finishing degree is important as it can alter the color and reflectivity of the surface.
PVD color chips usually cost nothing or are of nominal charges. If you choose a chip from the library, the sample time is zero. If you require a new color, be ready for a 1-week to a 2-week wait and pay a fee that ranges from $50 to $150.
Giving your PVD supplier a Pantone code will NOT get you the color you want. Ask to see their color chip sets. Pick from what they have. If you need their color to match your company’s brand color, look at their chips and find the color that is the best match to your brand.
Anodizing Aluminum Parts – Broader Range, Closer Match
PVD is used to coat aluminum parts such as purge valves, hookah diffuser guides, port covers, and trim rings. Anodizing increases the thickness of the aluminum parts and some color dyes can be absorbed to the surface. However, to achieve a color completion, you can only achieve a two shade setback from the Pantone. Most colors, including red, blue, green, purple, and orange can be achieved. However, colors that fall in the pastel range may be hard to achieve.
To make a custom dye bath, the factory identifies the Pantone color and mixes liquid dye to match the specified color. The factory performs a test sample and evaluates the color in a lighting booth to match the Pantone standard. The test sample is then anodized onto aluminum that has the same composition as the customer’s parts.
The cost of a test sample is between $100 and $200 and takes one to two weeks. Typically, one to two test samples are needed to achieve the desired color.
The consistency and quality of anodizing limit the dye added in a dye bath. The newer dye baths may result in a different shade than the older dye baths. Evaluating a factory for a reputable service, they monitor their dye baths and replace them at designated times. They even sort their parts by shade before packing to ensure the cartons appear uniform.
Another important consideration is surface finish, which impacts color. A polished surface would be darker than a matte surface in contrast. When specifying anodizing, you need to provide a Pantone code and both the surface finish and the surface finish type.
A Pantone code is a good starting point, but a color sample is the final reference. Only approve a production run if there is a color sample along with a Pantone code.
Silicone Hoses – Precision via Color Masterbatch
Among the parts of a hookah kit, silicone hoses are the most color-flexible parts. Each hose can be filled with granulated pigments and layered with colored silicone, ensuring consistency in color throughout the hose.
Masterbatch precision means spot on Pantone matches. Pigment powders are layered in a color lab and mixed with silicone. A small batch is painted with the mix for tests. If a color is wrong, adjustments are made and another test is done. Most factories can meet a Pantone target with one or two tests.
Standard colors from the factory become your only option when order size is below 500 kg of colored silicone, which is enough for thousands of hoses.
Custom colors of silicone are priced, sampled, and shipped quickly with a 7 day lead time, compared to other materials. Price, range, and speed of pigments are unmatched.
Silicone colors have great advantages over other materials because there is no firing, no chemistry, no variance in coating thickness. Color is consistent throughout the material and some fading and chipping is expected with normal use. Yellowing may happen, but this is the case for all colored silicone. Consistency also holds excellently with masterbatch and is done with a great degree of accuracy.
Production samples should be provided to assure color and consistency of formulation. The thickness of the finished product influences the look of Translucent Pastels, with thinner quickly appearing darker. Hoses in full scale should be sent for visual aids of production.
Silicone is the best medium for exact Pantone matching. If your hookah set has a silicone hose, start matching colors with that. You should match other components to the silicone. Based on the job, a packaging proof is $50 to $100. The printer will show the proof of a job in the actual paper and ink to be used. Approve the proof prior to the job going to print.
The substrate also affects the end color. Paper results the same ink in a different end color with uncoated craft or coated gloss. Always provide the Pantone code and substrate.
Due to the reliability of matching to Pantone, offset is the production of choice to ensure color consistency, not digital printing.
Metallic and fluorescent Pantone colors can display in prints, but not in PVD, anodizing, silicone, or ceramic. Therefore the packaging will differ from the product. Accept this difference and design around it.
Practical Guide: How to Specify Color for Your Hookah Factory
From experience, factory color communication fails if the wrong reference is provided. Here is the guide, from the most to the least reliable.
- Actual color sample. A Pantone textile chip, a paint chip, or a previous sample. An actual sample helps the factory eliminate the digital color translation errors and gives them something to hold and compare. Definitely the best option.
- Pantone code. Remember to include the finish suffix: C for coat, U for uncoated, TPX/TCX for textiles. An example of a finished Pantone would be 19-3911 TCX rather than simply calling it dark red. PVD cannot, but anodizing and silicone can, color match Pantone, and ceramic can only reference.
- Reference photographs. Color may be distorted depending on the camera sensor, screen calibration, and lighting. These should only be a supplement, and include a color reference when taking the photo.
Do not use signs alone to communicate colors. Avoid using phrases like “dark red” and “gunmetal gray.” These terms can mean different things to different factories, and the terms lose their meaning. Be specific and use the above guide. When in doubt, reference a physical sample.
Building Your Custom Hookah Color Chart
A custom color chart enables your entire supply chain to have one accurate reference.
Start with two or three base colors. For example: Matte Black, Rose Gold, Smoke Gray. Ensure that these colors are achievable in PVD, silicone, anodizing, and ceramic.
Request a color chip in all these materials from your factory. Place all chips on a single card. Label each chip with the material, the process, and number of factory reference.
Set acceptable tolerances and document your expected variation for all materials. Define your anchor material. This is usually silicone or PVD.
Distribute this chart to all of your suppliers/sub-suppliers and update it per production season.
