Understanding of PVD Coating

PVD is the abbreviation for Physical Vapor Deposition. It is a vacuum process that atomically transfers solid material to a substrate. At a minimum thickness of 0.5 microns, the film is bonded to the socles de narguilé metal.

PVD coating is not paint. Paint is found on the top. PVD is in the top layer. Under normal use, the coating does not chip, peel, or flake. It will not corrode and is resistant to UV light and abrasions unlike other wet coatings.

Multiple physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods exist. The most widely used for pièces pour narguilé is magnetron sputtering. Step #2: Loading. The now clean parts are fixed along a rotating planetary holder inside of the vacuum chamber. Shadowing happens when one part covers another, therefore not allowing the coating to reach that part. The time required for this step is dependent on the size of the chamber, usually around 30-60 minutes.

Step 4: Sputtering. During this step, the target material is bombarded with ionized argon gas. The argon ions cause atoms to break free from the target surface, which then travel in a straight line towards the parts. During this step, sputtering is done and vapor is created to deposit on the parts.

Step 5: Deposition. The argon gas gets replaced with a reactive gas. The gas will change the color of the coating. For instance, gold and brass tones are created by nitrogen gas, dark blue and gunmetal hues by oxygen gas, and the gas responsible for black DLC coatings is acetylene. The coating is built, one atomic layer at a time. The deposition process can last from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the desired thickness.

Step 6: Cooling and Unloading. The chamber is purged with inert gas and the parts are cooled to below 80°C. This prevents the hot parts from rapidly oxidizing in air when the chamber is opened. Cooling takes from 10 to 20 minutes, and the total time for an entire cycle is 2 to 4 hours.

Available Colors and Finishes

Limited color options. Thin-film process combined with narrow target material options provide limited color availability.

Rushed PVD coatings may provide between 10 and 15 color options. Generally, an experienced PVD coater will provide you with a standard range of colors to consider, including black. Black is the most common coating for modern hookahs, and can be achieved via DLC or a titanium-carbon coating. Black finishes can come in deep, matte, or satin options.

Gold imitates 24k gold coloring with titanium nitride. Gold color can vary from lighter yellow to deeper yellow, even to gold.

Rose Gold contains titanium nitride with adjusted nitrogen flow with some layers including copper. This variety of gold will appear warmer and pinker than standard gold.

Gunmetal is a dark gray color with some slight blue or brown undertones. This color is popular among anodized industrial-look stems.

Dark blue contains deep navy with a titanium oxide interference layer.

Bronze is a warmer brown metallic color. Though this is a less common color for anodization, it is growing in popularity.

Silver chrome is a bright metallic color with the use of chromium targets.

Rainbow or gradient color finishes are created by using gas flow modulation during a single run. This style of finish is also expensive and difficult.

PVD will not support the entire Pantone color library. If a brand or company uses the Custom Pantone 298C color (light blue), it will be impossible for PVD to replicate. Achieving light blues, bright greens or pure red coloring is impossible with the physics of thin-film interference.

There are surface finish options that also include a matte, satin, or gloss and a textured finish. The surface finish will also depend on the preparation of the base metal. For example, a glass-blasted stem will produce a matte PVD finish while a mirror-polished stem will produce a gloss PVD finish.

DLC vs. Standard PVD

DLC stands for Diamond-Like Carbon. This also is a style of PVD, exclusive to the use of carbon as the target material.

Standard PVD utilizes metal targets which can include titanium, chromium, or zirconium. When these metal targets are used, the color will be metallic and create a moderate hardness. The hardness of PVD can range from 1500 to 2500 HV (Vickers hardness).

DLC is a coating that has the appearance of diamonds. With a hardness of 3000-5000 HV, it’s very similar to natural diamonds. Compared to other PVD coatings, DLC is harder and has an increased resistance to scratches.

DLC also has a lower coefficient of friction than PVD, with DLC at 0.1 and PVD at 0.4. Because of this, DLC coatings also resist fingerprints and scratches.

DLC has some trade-offs as a coating. Primarily, it is limited to black and dark gray finishes. DLC also takes longer, and has a higher cost compared to some other coatings. DLC also requires a higher deposition temperature of 400°C as opposed to the 200°C of other PVD coatings. This can cause issues with heat-sensitive coatings and parts.

DLC is the best choice for hookah stems. It has the best scratch resistance and black finishes that can be found in any coating. Because of these benefits, DLC is also on the more expensive side of coatings, costing 30-50% more than PVD.

DLC is a better choice for high-end products, while PVD is a better choice for most standard products.

Color Sample Creation

Each production run must begin with a color sample. This is a requirement that cannot be negotiated. The cost of coatings can be dependent on the coating house, and we can expect variations in batches.

The method begins with a reference. This can be in the form of a physical sample, a known lighting photo of a Pantone chip, etc. The coater will tune their parameters for the best match.

Each color sample costs between $100 and $200. This includes setup, fixture fabrication, and running a coating cycle specific to your part. If you send a stem for sampling, you will get your stem back after it’s coated.

The current turnaround time for samples is 1 to 2 weeks. The first sample is usually not the final approved version, so plan for one to two sample revisions. Count on three weeks for the turn around from when you submit your sample for approval to when you get your approved sample.

To facilitate a smoother and quicker sample approval, send a production part that is polished for the sample. Polished parts sample a different PVD color than parts with a raw finish. When sending lighting for reference, use the D65 daylight standard, and maintain the light level for gloss samples.

With an approved sample, the coater locks parameters, which means all future color runs will share the exact recipe. Durability and Performance

PVD coating surpasses any other finish available for hookah components. Here are the key metrics.

Corrosion resistance: PVD coatings on stainless steel passed 500+ hours of testing per ASTM B117. No pitting, no rust. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings passed 750+ hours. For reference, chrome coatings fail between 100 and 200 hours. The brushed and uncoated stainless steel shows rust within 48 hours of a salt spray test.

Scratch resistance: Normal handling leads to minor scratching on standard PVD. Moderate steel wool brushing leaves no discernable marks. To scratch the PVD coating, a carbide tool is required. These coatings will last much longer than anodized aluminum and painted finishes.

UV stability: PVD coatings are inorganic. They will not yellow, fade, or deteriorate under sunlight. A hookah on display in a window-front lounge will keep its color from fading for years, while painted and powder-coated finishes will begin to show UV damage within months.

Chemical resistance: PVD can withstand hookah cleaning chemicals, including isopropyl alcohol and mild acids, as well as commercial metal polishes. PVD does not react with glycerin and nicotine, nor with flavoring compounds in hookah smoke.

Which Parts Can Get PVD

PVD works on metal parts, but not all metals are equal candidates.

PVD works best with 304 and 316 stainless steel grades. These metals usually require no more than a standard cleaning to prepare for coating. PVD coating works well with various stems, so standard 304 stainless steel stems would be a great candidate.

Brass also has great substrate qualities. During deposition, brass absorbs heat differently, which can cause brass to change color slightly. Experienced coaters can compensate for this. Brass fittings, base connectors, and tray rims coat without issues.

Aluminium requires a primer coating as PVD has trouble bonding directly to aluminium oxide, which forms immediately on unprotected aluminium. The answer is a thin ceramic or nickel interlayer. Some coaters refuse to coat aluminium parts, while others do it at a surcharge and without a color-match guarantee. If your product is made with aluminium stems, you should expect higher prices and stricter color tolerances.

Copper and bronze can be workable, but generally do not appear in hookah production due to their ability to gas off when heated in a vacuum, meaning they can contaminate your coating. This can be mitigated by a long pump down time or a diffusion barrier layer.

Due to the PVD chamber being heated to a temperature of between 200 and 400 degrees celsius, non-metallic materials will be destroyed. Things like glass, acrylic bases, and carbon fiber bases will not be eligible for PVD coating.

Manufacturers must find alternative methods to coat such bases, like painting, anodizing, or dip coating. PVD impacts threaded connections by adding 0.5 to 5 microns of thickness, which is negligible. No extra machining is needed, as the coating is thin enough to utilize standard tolerances.

The ordering process is pretty standard. Knowing how it works can be helpful in saving time.

Step 1. Submit reference photos. Your reference photos should show the entire piece along with close-ups for detail areas like engravings, stepped transitions, and threaded areas. Due to surface condition, do not use harsh shadows. Use diffused daylight.

Step 2. Specify your desired color. If available, use the coater’s color display. If not, provide a Pantone reference or color sample. Be specific in what color you want. For example, say “24k yellow gold, similar to Tiffany hardware” instead of “gold”.

Step 3. Specify surface finish. Your choice of matte, satin, or gloss applies to the coating and surface prep. A hookah coating will only be matte black if the stem was previously glass blasted, or glossy rose gold if the stem was polished to a mirror finish.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Here’s a grand list of the most expensive mistakes new buyers make and the ways to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Purchasing PVD on badly machined parts. PVD finishes conceal nothing. Any and all surface imperfections, scratches, tool marks, pitting, and poor polishing are easily visible through a coat. The coating is only about 0.5 to 5 microns thick, making it a simple task for PVD to follow the contours which means it will replicate the surface. Any poor quality surface will produce a coating of a poor quality as well.

Take the time to polish all parts before sending them out to get coated. After the PVD, any defects the surface had will still be there, only now with a coating.

Mistake 2: Mixing different metals into a single order. Stainless steel, brass, and aluminum, with identical process parameters still produce slightly different PVD colors, thereby making it possible that a stem and base tray from different materials will not match.

Coat parts which are from the same material. If your hookah uses multiple metals, request the coater to run compatibility tests during the sample phase.

Mistake 3: Browsing on the Internet. People save time by approving colors through photographs. These never do justice to the actual coatings. The only thing that can be trusted must be seen in person. The coating has to be sample approved.

Answer the following questions before you agree to any PVD production run:

Will your customers pay more for a product that looks and functions better and is more durable? If competing on price is your market’s strategy, steer clear of PVD, as the cost per unit will leap.

Are your parts uniform and consistent? PVD cannot be expected to improve the quality of a surface finish, and parts with an inconsistent surface finish will be made worse by PVD. As such, you must ensure reliable upstream supply.

Will you be placing production orders that will be no less than a certain number of items? Most PVD coaters do runs of no fewer than 50 to 100 items. If you want to coat just 20 items and want them in 4 different colors, you will incur cost for the setup for each of the 4 color runs.

Will you be ordering the same color product multiple times? If you will be placing orders for the same color multiple times, you can count on PVD to be consistent, as long as the coater keeps their process and the supplier keeps the same base material.

If you are able to answer “yes” to all 4 questions, then PVD looks to be a good option for your hookah line.

Final Word
