Breakage
O-Rings dry up and crack. They also hold residues of tobacco oils and cleaning solvents. After two to three hundred sessions, the silicone O-Ring becomes useless.
I have done tests with O-Rings from five factories. The poor quality O-Rings hardened with daily use in six weeks. The quality food grade silicone (70 durometer) began leaking after four months of use.
The process is easy, however, if you manage thirty hookahs, that’s thirty O-Rings to track and replace each quarter. You start to feel the cost.
Ergonomic Considerations
Hookah O-Rings trap moisture. This is further worsened when you wash a hookah and put it away still moist. The O-Ring groove starts to be infested by mold. After a month, the seal degrades.
The individual joints need to be left to dry. In a busy lounge, they most likely use the O-Rings in conjunction with other connections.
