You blew into the hose.

Water surfaced and the pipe became unresponsive. The tension became unbearable.

It was just like every other hookah session you had. Now, this beautiful session is finished.

Do not dump the bowl, you are not done yet.

To fix a flooded bowl you need to follow the steps to drain, dry and relight.

What Causes a Flooded Hookah Bowl

All of the water should be at the bottom. None of it should rise up and reach the bowl. But this happens when there is too much pressure in the hose.

When air is blown down the hose, it moves all the water along with it through the down hookah stems and up into the bowl. Water fills the bowl and ruins the tobacco. Unfortunately, it burns the tobacco. Overfilling a bowl also causes flooding.

There are many causes to flooding a bowl, but no matter the cause, the result is the same. This causes all the heat to be taken away from the shisha. Shisha is not smoke, it then causes a burnt taste that is disgusting.

How to Tell If Your Bowl Is Flooded

No terror of a guess is needed as there are plenty of obvious signs to tell if a bowl is flooded.

Water is in the stem. Pull the hose connector and look in the port. If you see water droplets, water has reached the port.

It will gurgle when you pull it. The normal Wasserpfeifen-Sockel water sloshing is fine. Flood water gurgling the bowl above is a problem.

Wet heat does not smoke. The coals on the wet tobacco will hiss, simmer, and produce no smoke.

The vapor is thin, wet, and leaves a soapy taste to whatever it touches.

Stop pulling the device as it will draw more moisture. This is a serious problem and must be fixed immediately.

Step 1: Empty the Bowl

Moisture in the tobacco will expand and be evenly distributed, ruining it. Dark-leaf blends draw moisture into themselves. They will ruin any blend packed with bright-leaf tobacco blends. Without a doubt, delaying this problem will only compound the problem.

Remove the Bowl

Remove the bowl and place it on a trash bin or over a sink. It should be in a horizontal orientation. This will ensure that gravity assists in the outflow of any destructive moisture.

Laying the bowl upright will only set water in the bottom of the pack. It should be at a 45-degree angle, and the moisture should leave through the bottom hole.

Pat the Bottom

Use a clean cloth or paper towel to dry the bottom of the bowl. Dry it as much as you can. Replace the towel as it saturates.

Continue until it is mostly dry, which should take only thirty seconds. You’ll save the pack.

Check the Tobacco

Peering at the shisha now, is it dark and clumpy? Are there pools of liquid at the bottom? If half the shisha is dry, you can save it. If the whole shisha is saturated, it’s time for a repack.

For a hookah bowl that is partially submerged, you can remove the top wet layer. You can use a toothpick or paperclip to remove the saturated shisha. Remove that only and leave the dry tobacco below. You lose some the total amount you can pack, but the session is saved.

Step 2: Dry the Tobacco and Bowl

You can’t smoke wet tobacco. You need to remove excess water.

Method A: Paper Towel Blot (Fastest)

Take a small piece of paper towel. Fold it and press on the top layer of tobacco. Rotate to a clean section of towel and repeat. This takes about a minute or two.

Method B: Blow-Dry the Pack (No Heat Gun)

If you have canned air, use small bursts in an upward angle to give the tobacco a good airflow. Let the tobacco sit for thirty seconds, and the air helps the water evaporate.

Method C: Repack with Dry Shisha

Another way to solve this problem is to remove the wet shisha completely and swap it for fresh, dry tobacco. This is the most effective method, and it only adds about thirty seconds to your setup time.

When you repack, ensure you pack at the same density. Fluff the same, if not less. Repacking can make you think the solution is to pack it tighter. Resist that. Less is more.

Dry the Bowl Surface

Make sure to dry the hooks bowl completely before getting back to the smoke. Dry the rim of the bowl and the carb. Use a dry cloth or paper towel for the best results.

Dry the Grommet

Water will get caught in the rubber grommet, so remove it from the stem and dry completely. Air leaks can occur and ruin the pull if the grommet is still wet.

Step 3: Re-Light the Session

The bowl is empty, the tobacco is dry, now we need to bring this.

Use Fresh Coals

Once the bowl is empty, the water has ruined the coals and it’s time to add new coals to bring some usable heat back. At this point the wet tobacco has produced steam which makes the coals cold inside. Fresh coals must be added to bring heat back.

Adjust the HMD or Foil

If you’re using an HMD, like a Kaloud Lotus or an Alpha Hookah FNX, place it onto the bowl and allow the HMD to preheat for one minute before adding the coals. If you’re using foil, take a fresh piece and cover the bowl. Make a tight ring of holes along the edge and keep the middle open. It helps to focus heat along the edge of the foil where it’s the driest. The middle will still be moist so we want to smoke edge first.

Let the Bowl Warm Up

After putting the coals onto the bowl, let it sit. You shouldn’t pull the bowl just yet. Allow the bowl to warm for 2-3 minutes.

With your the palm of your hand, feel the top of the HMD or foil. It should feel warm, but not hot. If the bowl feels hot and still doesn’t produce smoke, give it another minute as the moisture has yet to evaporate.

Take a Test Pull

Now, try to take a pull. It should be short, not hard or long.

If you see a thin cloud, nice work. You’re now pulling your first edge. It should be followed by a nice dense cloud. If you can’t get any smoke at all after three minutes, you should repack with fresh shisha. You should not be trying to pull smoke from a bowl with wet shisha. Soaked shisha leads to a burned bowl and used coals.

How to Prevent Your Hookah Bowl From Flooding

The best option is to avoid a fix altogether, and that is what this guide is going to help you achieve. Read on to keep all the water in the water jar.

Water Level Management

When filling the water jar, make sure the down stem is submerged by about a centimeter or two. This is where the water is best positioned to diffuse air. Anything more than this increases the chance of messy water spills.

To avoid the guess work, you can mark your water jar with a piece of tape on the water level.

Don’t Blow in the Hose

This is the biggest cause of flooding. You cough; you clear the hose; you blow hard. This launches a water mini-missile out of the down stem.

To clear stale smoke, remove the hose first and blow into the disconnected hose. This clears the stale air without pushing water to the bowl.

You could also purge smoke. Most hookahs have purge valves. Pull the hose, and press the valve. This will let the pressured air out of the base.

Use a Bowl with the Right Depth

Browse our bowl collection — some bowls are designed to be shorter than others. A shallow bowl decreases the distance between the tobacco and the down stem, which means even a well packed bowl could splash. Deeper bowls, like a phunnel design, reduce the chance of flooding because water has to diffuse across a greater distance to reach the tobacco.

Oblako phunnel bowl guide is available here.

Check Your Grommet Seal

A loose bowl means a wobbly bowl, which means a shifting bowl while pulling. This causes water to overflow the sides. Make sure your grommet is tight. When the bowl heats up, the juice trickles and mixes into the base water. This increases the flood risk.

Pack dark leaf blends a little fluffier and maintain a small gap between the tobacco and the foil or heat management device (HMD). This ensures that the leaves are not melted, as the air gap allows the heat to reach the leaves.

When a Flooded Bowl Means Its Time for a New Bowl

Not every hookah bowl survives a flood.
