They require more force to achieve insertion. The seal is much more aggressive. The gasket also maintains a higher contact pressure, which helps to offset design fluctuations in downstem tolerancing.<\/p>\n<p>For hookah base gaskets, the ideal hardness is measured at Shore A 50 to 60. This range provides just the right amount of firmness for easy installation, while providing enough softness to maintain sealing pressure with the practically acceptable tolerance of glass base necks.<\/p>\n<p>Some premium brands offer gaskets with a dual-durometer design, where a silicone outer layer surrounds a softer inner core. Although costly, they provide a good combination of ease of insertion and sealing considering the repeated thermal cycling a hookah base experiences, gaskets do have a limited life cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The base is filled with cold water and the smoke is cool as it passes through the system, but as hands grip the system and pass the smoke, the water is removed and the base is rinsed, and filled with cold water again. This cycle happens dozens of times throughout the course of a smoking session, with hundreds of sessions per month.<\/p>\n<p>Even the best gaskets that are made of silicone have to accommodate the unavoidable differences between the downstem and the glass of the base during repeated thermal cycles. It is possible for a silicone gasket to maintain the pressure contact throughout the full thermal cycle if it is fully compressed by as much as 50%. This translates to a full cycle temperature of about 20 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Thermal cycling does not cause low-grade gaskets to leak suddenly. Instead, it causes them to creep. Creep is a slow, permanent change in the cross-section of the gasket. After many hundreds of cycles, EPDM and low-grade gaskets will develop a zone that is compressed and will no longer be able to expand and fill that zone after the assembly cools back to room temperature. Initially, the leak will not be obvious, but then it will be sudden and obvious.<\/p>\n<p>After 1,000 thermal cycles, Platinum-cured Silicone with a Shore A of 55 and a compression set above 90% developed negligible creep.
