Then, came the heat management device, or HMD. Allowing for an adjustable metal housing to be placed on top of the foil, the HMD offered optimal heat distribution, needing far fewer coals. However, the next logical step was realized not so long ago, when the foil was eliminated and the HMD was placed in direct contact with the tobacco, all of which was done by a skilled, innovative group of smokers. This tobacco setup is referred to as Contact Setup, or HMD Direct Contact Tobacco Hookah Method.

If you have yet to place the HMD directly on the Shisha, you have been missing out on something potentially life-changing. The Contact Pack Hookah setup alters a session in the manner of how heat is transferred and how vapor is produced. It also changes how flavor is delivered and how long the session lasts. While it is not for every tobacco, the verdict speaks for itself. The session is more concentrated and brings optimal results (huge clouds) and delivers more than ample amounts of nicotine in a shorter time and in fewer draws.

In this guide, we will cover what the Contact Setup really is, what tobaccos and bowls work best with it, an easy to follow, step-by-step process of packing with heat adjustments, and the real-world effects you can expect. Let’s get into the Contact Setup and master the HMD overpack technique!

What Is a Contact Setup?

Contact setup means that the HMD is placed directly on the surface of the tobacco with no foil or screen in between. Traditionally, foil would be stretched tightly over the bowl and the HMD would be placed on top of the foil.

Key features of contact setup method includes:

– The tobacco is packed enough to overflow the bowl, meaning that the shisha level is above the bowl rim.

– The tobacco is leveled and pressed flat enough so that the HMD Wasserpfeifen-Sockel contacts the tobacco evenly.

– Foils and screens are not used, meaning the HMD contacts the tobacco directly.

– The HMD is loaded with coals and placed over the packed bowl.

This setup is called a “naked HMD” and contact pack hookah style. The idea behind it is to maximize thermal conduction, meaning that with the base of the HMD touching the tobacco directly, the heat would be conducted into the tobacco directly rather than passing through an air gap and then foil. This method leads to highly efficient heat transfer which drastically alters the way sessions are managed and the results of the sessions.

Why Choose the Contact Pack Hookah Method?

Why do experienced hookah smokers ditch the tried and true method of using foil? The HMD direct contact tobacco method is worth mastering for several reasons.

Optimal Heat Transfer

Thermal barriers are present within foil, so with even the best HMD, the heat must first warm up the HMD chamber, and then go through an air gap to foil and then conduct through foil to reach the tobacco. This optimizes each of the thermal interfaces. Hence, removing the foil and the air gap results in the greatest thermal contact possible, hence heat loss is minimized. This implies fewer coals or lower coal temperature is needed to achieve similar or even better vapor output.

Optimized Vapor Output

Under the enhanced heat transfer capability, the tobacco foil barrier is greatly reduced, hence tobacco will be heated to the vaporization temperature quickly. This phenomenon will result in larger clouds.

Enhanced Nicotine Delivery

The direct conduct system delivers a higher concentration of nicotine and flavor compounds per draw. Smokers who are used to Verpackung mit dunklen Blättern blends will appreciate how the direct contact tobacco hookah method amplifies the strength the high-nicotine shisha.

Faster Sessions

Foil-and-HMD sessions can normally take an hour or two. However, a contact setup session is usually completed in as little as half an hour, but still achieves the same vapor quantity. If you prefer short and intense sessions, this is definitely a huge plus.

Cleaner Flavor Profile

While the use of aluminum foil is standard among many HMDs, even the highest quality foil can still have a sharp, metallic aftertaste. By removing the foil, you get the raw tobacco and heat. Smokers are in agreement that the flavor is much more authentic and clean without foil.

Best Tobacco for HMD Contact

Shisha packs are at the heart of HMD’s contact setup, but not every tobacco works with a contact setup. To avoid burning and harsh unpleasant tastes, you need specific or optimized tobacco for the HMD contact setup. Dark leaf Tobaccos — such as Tangiers, Azure Dark, Trifecta Dark, or MustHave — are the gold standard for contact setups. These blends are made with dark, air-cured leaf that contains significantly higher nicotine content and greater heat tolerance than Virginia-based blonde leaf. Dark leaf shisha is designed to handle higher temperatures, making it suited to the conduction of a contact pack.

Coarse Cut Tobacco

If you’re looking for coarse cut tobacco, it’s best to use tobacco that has larger chunks of tobacco in comparison to cut tobacco that has a finer cut. Coarse cut tobacco shisha keeps its structure under pressure, collapses less in the bowl when the heat management device (HMD) is placed on top, and keeps air channels clearer. When inspecting shisha blends, it is best to choose the blends that have visible pieces of shisha rather than a thick and pasty blend.

High Glycerin Content

For shisha blends that have a high amount of glycerin (VG) content, shisha can be more forgiving to direct heat and produce even more shisha. A lot of modern premium brands of shisha create shisha with glycerin and molasses to have the right ratios to create shisha that can be even more forgiving to direct heat and produce a lot more shisha. It is best to use a shisha that has a moist and sticky feel and has a lot of visible liquid.

Tobaccos to Avoid

If you are looking for a shisha blend to use in a contact setup, shisha blends such as Al Fakher and starbuzz blonde leaf tobaccos are used for shisha that has a finer cut and are recommended to be avoided in a contact setup. When using a shisha blend that is blonde leaf, the best way to buffer the heat of a blonde leaf tobacco blend is to mix the shisha tobacco blend in equal parts with a dark leaf tobacco or a coarse cut tobacco.

Choosing the Right Bowl

When using the HMD direct contact tobacco hookah method to pack a hookah tobacco bowl, the right shape of the bowl can help a lot. The two most important bowl features for a set up like this are a flat rim and straight vertical walls.
Flat Rim
For a hookah heat management device (HMD) to sit comfortably flat for stable contact, a good, flat, even rim is required. Bowls with a concave or lipped rim will cause the HMD to rock or leave gaps. This will destroy the even contact you are trying to achieve. The flatter the rim, the better the seal, and the more consistent the heat transfer.

Straight (Vertical) Walls

Against a funnel-style or phunnel bowl guide, bowls with straight, near-vertical walls, are favored. This is because vertical walls allow for the tobacco to be packed evenly up to the rim, without the shisha compressing inward as you push it down flat. For veteran contact setup users, the HJ (HookahJohn) Harmony bowl, the Alpaca Lerook, and the Mason Stynger are all great choices.

Bowls to Avoid

When contact setups are involved, do not use the Egyptian-style bowls (the traditional clay bowls with multiple small holes). This is because the angled walls and uneven rim will make consistent packing nearly impossible. Because of their larger sizes, large phunnel bowls with wider diameters are more suited for longer group sessions, as they require significantly more tobacco to fill the rim.

The HMD Overpack Technique: A Step by Step Guide

Now we get to the practical side of things. To achieve a proper contact setup, make sure to follow these steps carefully. This protocol applies to most standard HMDs including the Kaloud Lotus, Stratus, Applebox, and Nacho HMDs.

Step 1: Prepare Your Tobacco

To prepare your shisha, remove it from the package and break any packed together sections apart. These should be well mixed and the juices evenly distributed. If the container liquid pools at the bottom, it has excess glycerin, which should be patted out with a paper towel. The tobacco should not be dry and should feel moist.

Step 2: Pack the Bowl — The Overpack

Using your fingers or a fork, pack the tobacco into the bowl, but do not compress or pack it tightly. The shisha should be higher than the bowl lip, which signifies that the bowl is overpacked. The tobacco should be 1-2 mm higher than the bowl rim.

Step 3: Level and Press Flat

The face of the HMD or the back of a spoon can be used to press the tobacco down. It should not be overly compressed, or it will block the necessary airflow. The tobacco should be level with the rim of the shisha and packed tightly enough to hold contact, but loose enough to allow airflow.

Step 4: Place the HMD

The HMD goes directly on the flattened tobacco level, no foil. Press down for a minute to make sure the HMD base is in full contact with the tobacco. The HMD should be stable, without wobbling. If it rocks, the tobacco may be uneven, and the HMD should be removed to re-level the tobacco. Contact is important, as it is the foundation of the HMD direct contact tobacco hookah method.

Step 5: Add Coals

The biggest difference with the contact setup versus a standard pack is the number of coals needed. Because heat transfer is efficiently, you typically need one fewer coal than usual. If you normally use three cubes, use two. If you use two flats, start with one. As always, start with the least amount, and adjust heat as needed to avoid a burnt bowl.

The coals go in the HMD with the vents closed and the setup is left to sit for 4-5 minutes to heat the tobacco.

Step 6: Wait and Test

After the tobacco has warmed, take a test pull. These pulls should be gentle. The draw should not be restricted, and you should be able to pull thick vapor almost immediately. If the draw is restricted, the vents should be opened. Add a small coal to weak vapor, and wait a minute. The coalition should be removed to open the vents to cool the chamber if the smoke is harsh or tastes burnt.

Step 7: Adjust and Enjoy

Having dialed in the heat, you can expect the session to progress from there with minimal vent adjustments. Generally, with the tobacco in direct contact with the HMD, you’ll find the flavor shifts and intensifies more quickly than during a foil session. You can expect the bowl to last roughly 35–50 minutes before the tobacco is spent.

Heat Management: Why One Less Coal?

The easiest mistake to make with a contact pack hookah is to use too much heat. It is a mistake that is easy to make as you see the same HMD, the same coals, the same bowl, so you think the same heat settings apply. This is not correct.

When you use a foil setup, the foil and air gap act as passive heat sinks. They do absorb and dissipate some of the heat before it reaches the tobacco. With a contact setup, that buffer is not there. Every joule of heat from the coals goes directly into the shisha. The heat transfer coefficient between a metal HMD surface and moist tobacco is roughly two to three times higher compared to the same setup with foil.

Generally, reduce coal count by one from your traditional foil setup. With three titanium cubes, use just two. With two flat cubes, use one and one half. Smaller coals can be used, with 22 mm cubes replacing the 26 mm cubes, for a more refined control over heat. The objective is to determine the minimal amount of heat to create satisfying vapor, and adjust from that point.

The management of the systems’ air intake also varies. In a foil setup, the air intake is mostly open, while with a contact setup, the air intake is mostly closed or almost closed, as the contact setup utilizes a different method of heating. If the air intake is open to the widest setting, it is possible for the setup to cool the HMD Chamber too rapidly, which leads to the tobacco being under heated, and the vapor being thin and lacking density.

What to Expect: The Contact Setup Session

For users who have solely used foil, the first pulls in the contact setup will have a noticeably different experience. Here is a sample timeline to expect in a typical contact session.

Minutes 0 – 5 (Warm up) Notice that the bowl will heat up more quickly. If you wait the 3 minutes as expected, the HMD Module will be hot enough to touch. It is important that you do not smoke during this time; you must wait for the tobacco to reach the desired temperature.

Minutes 5-15 (Peak Vapor): During initial puffs, the vapor is at its thickest and fullest and the flavor is at its crispest. If you have dark leaf, the nicotine should hit you in the first few minutes.

Minutes 15-30 (Sustained Output): Burning your tobacco for this duration should still give you a good amount of vapor, but you might have to control your vents. The flavor will continue to improve and you might need to either flip or rotate your coals once.

Minutes 30-45 (End Phase): This is the period where your session is coming to a close. The flavor and the vapor are of a significantly lower quality and probably not worth savoring. Your session is most likely going to end in 15 minutes or less.

When Not To Use Contact Setup

The HMD direct contact tobacco hookah is not the best solution for every tobacco HMD. These are some examples of when you should probably not use direct contact:

– Blonde Leaf Tobacco with Fine Cut: This type of tobacco burns too fast and can come off as harsh when in direct contact.

– Beaded or Lipped Bowl Rims: Direct contact tobacco lead to uneven vapor.

– Outdoor sessions with wind: Direct contact setups are more sensitive to ambient temperature changes.

– Long sessions that involve socializing: If you are trying to session and relax for more than an hour, using foil would be the best option available.

– Low nicotine tolerance: This type of tobacco can be problematic for people with a lower tolerance for nicotine.

Knowing if you should use contact or stick with foil is a sign of a more seasoned smoker. Each style has its advantage. The contact pack hookah style is used for shorter, stronger, and cloud chasing sessions, while foil is generally used for longer sessions with groups and for lighter tobacco.

Linkup hookah has everything you need to try the HMD overpack technique and contact pack setups.

Here are our favorites:

– Precision-machined with a flat base for maximum contact surface. By removing the foil, you expose yourself to better heat transfer and improve the thickness of your clouds, the strength of the nicotine, and the duration of your hookah sessions. The only downside to this technique is a more difficult challenge and a smaller margin of error, but this challenge is well worth the outcome.

Use dark leaf or coarse-cut tobacco; choose a bowl with a flat rim and straight walls; overpack it so the shisha is just above the rim; press it flat; put the HMD on the tobacco; use one less coal; and wait five minutes before your first pull. This is the HMD overpack technique in a nut shell.

The contact setup is an advanced technique that takes practice, adjustment, and control, but will reward you with the densest clouds.

We aim to bring smoking to all levels of customer, from first timers to veterans.
