2. How to Conduct a Proper Hookah Air Leak Inspection

Check by placing the HMD on the empty bowl and holding it with your palm. Try to blow through the bottom of the bowl. If air leaks from the HMD and bowl rim, it’s a leak. Moisten the rim slightly. Water tension creates a temporary seal, but the real solution is to change the bowl/HMD combo or use a silicone gasket adapter.
For the bowl-to-stem seal, a wet paper towel or silicone gasket can bridge the gap. However, the real solution is the appropriate bowl for your stem.

2c. Purge Valve / Ball Bearing

The purge valve clears stale smoke from the base. If it’s leaking, stale air fills the base. A typically small ball bearing, made from either metal or plastic, will sit on a seat. If this bearing is dirty or corroded, or stuck, it will not seal the purge valve.

To get it functioning again, disassemble the purge valve housing and bearing, and clean the bearing and seat. Old dried molasses, dust, and mineral deposits are the main issues. Then try it. The ball should fall freely to its position. Otherwise, clean again or replace it.

2d. Downstem Thread O-Ring

A lot of contemporary hookahs feature a threaded connection for joining the downstem and the main stem body. If an O-ring is located on those threads, it can either wear or become displaced during assembly. By unscrewing the downstem, it is possible to check the condition of the O-ring for cracks, flattening, or obstruction. Coating light scratches with food grade silicone grease will fill in the scratches.

Hookahs that have no O-rings visible can still have minor leaks at the thread interface. In these cases, a few wraps of plumber’s tape on the threads will create an airtight seal.

3. Water Depth and Diffuser Position

How much water your hookah base contains has an impact on the thickness of the smoke. If a downstem is too deeply submerged, the smoke will be too thin due to a poor airflow caused by the increased resistance. Conversely, if the downstem is not submerged enough, unfiltered smoke can irritate the throat.

The ideal position is when 1–2 cm, or about a half to one inch of the downstem, is submerged. To get the desired water levels, fill your base. The ideal pack: Tobacco fills the bowl evenly and has a little spring-back when packed gently. For dense-cut tobaccos, a semi-dense pack is ideal. For fluffy-cut tobaccos, a fluff pack is best. Keep adjusting and testing until you’ve nailed your optimal pack.
