Material: Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) foam with a reflective aluminum film layer. This blocks both liquid wicking and vapor transmission. Avoid open-cell foam, which absorbs water and becomes a moisture reservoir itself.
Thickness: Minimum 3 mm for standard warehouse floors; 5–6 mm for unpainted concrete or for floors with visible “sweating” during the humid months
Coverage: Mats must be placed on warehouse floors in a continuous grid with seams taped at junctions and overlapped by at least 6 inches. Large gaps in mats are the weak points of the system and areas most prone to moisture failure.
Mats and plastic pallets create a greater moisture barrier than mats alone because of the airspace created. If the carton is opened, the surface of the coal will equilibrate to a moisture content of 9 to 11% in under 72 hours when the ambient relative humidity is 70%. In as little as 14 days, the coal will be ruined.
Best practices for sealed container management:
- Thoroughly inspect all received sealed transport cartons. Any sealed transport cartons that are damaged should be immediately rejected. Even a tiny hole in a vacuum bag will result in the contents being unsealed.
- Implement the “first-sealed, first-out” (FSFO) system. Date the seal break for each pallet. Ship coal with older seals first, regardless of arrival date. This system is backwards from the normal FIFO method. In this case, the exposure time is the primary metric for coal degradation rather than shipment or receipt date.
- Smart Repackaging. For buyers requiring smaller order quantities, seal coal in multi-layer laminated barrier bags from manufacturer supply with interior oxygen absorbers and one-way degas valves. These bags must be sealed with a heat seal. Clipping a bag does not offer a proper seal.
- Desiccant system. Seal containers must be opened frequently (for example, a daily pick bin) and be filled with silica gel desiccant packs. A good rule of thumb is 5 to 10 grams of silica desiccant per kilogram of coal. In excess of approximately an 80 percent relative humidity environment, activated clay and molecular sieve desiccants perform better than standard silica.
- Individual container climate control. For longer term storage of coal greater than 30 days, place open master cartons in a sealed tote or bin with its own desiccant, like a “container within a container.” The outer seal protects the inner goods while the inventory is removed.
Warehouse Climate: The Numbers You Need to Know
You cannot manage what you do not measure. A charcoal storage area should always be monitored. Here are the recommended values:
Temperature: 15–25 °C (59–77 °F). Above 30 °C, the organic binders in coal may degrade and the quick-light coal may combust spontaneously. Though this is rare at these temperatures, it can still happen. If the temperature is below 10 °C, there is a risk of condensation in the warm up cycles.
Humidity: 50% RH maximum; Ideal, 35–45% RH. Moisture absorption in coal is measurable at 60% RH and above.
Minimum number of data loggers: One for every 500 sq. ft. of storage space. Place the loggers at pallet height. Place the loggers so they are not on the floor and not on the ceiling. Log data every 15 minutes. Set alerts for RH and temperature to ensure RH does not rise above 55% and temperature does not rise above 28 °C. Data loggers that are USB powered, and can export data in the form of a CSV, cost $20–30 each, which is a bargain when considering the cost of a ruined pallet.
Most climates require a commercial desiccant dehumidifier to ensure that the storage area is within the 35–45% RH target. Refrigerant-Wasserpfeifen-Sockeld dehumidification units are not effective below 20 °C, and hence, cannot be relied upon in these areas. In storage areas less than 500 sq. ft., a standalone desiccant dehumidification unit with a capacity of 50 pints/day is adequate. In storage areas greater than 500 sq. ft., dehumidification can be incorporated in the HVAC system.
Prepare for the monsoon season in the areas of South China, Vietnam, India, and in the coastal areas of the UAE. These locations may only have a two-week monsoon season, but that can undo months of properly controlled storage. During the monsoon season, you should pre-position sealed totes and additional desiccants.
Pest and Contaminant Prevention in Charcoal Storage
Most pests cannot survive in charcoal, but the boxes and bags charcoal arrives in can attract a host of pests. Paper cartons and the glue used to seal them attract cockroaches, silverfish, and rodents. When these pests invade a storage unit they can leave behind droppings, nest materials, and urine, all of which will contaminate the charcoal when the cartons are opened.

- – Stock may be raised off the floor on plastic pallets. Wooden pallets can harbor pests.
- – A twelve inch inspection clearance space should be maintained.
- – Instead of bait poisons, use glue boards and pheromone traps.
- – Stock should be rotated so a carton does not remain unopened for more than ninety days.
- – Close all holes larger than one-quarter inch. These can be pests’ highways.
