304 Stainless Steel: The New Backbone of the Modern Industry

304 stainless steel (also known as 18/8 chromium-nickel austenitic) is one of the most commonly used materials for the high-end manufacturing of premium hookahs. Considerable use can be found in the mid- to high-end range of hookah stems, trays, and fittings in the Steamulation, Moze, MIG, Amotion, and Aeon brands. The 18–20% level of chromium in these steels helps to form a thin, passive chromium oxide layer that is self-healing. This self-healing layer is the reason stainless steel is known to not corrode. Stainless steel will not rust prevention or tarnish and will not chemically react with the acidic components of hookah tobacco juice or with the glycerin-based molasses. In accelerated salt-spray testing (ASTM B117), stainless steel 304 typically exceeds 200 hours before any surface pitting appears, while untreated brass typically lasts 24-48 hours.

Manufacturing & Machining

Stainless 304 cannot be classified as a free machining alloy. The work hardening and thermal characteristics of 304 require stronger tooling, greater feed and spindle control, and higher coolant delivery. Due to this, the cost of machining 304 is substantially higher than for machining brass or POM (Polyoxymethylene).  The cost of CNC machining a 304 stainless downstem fitting is about 2–3 times the cost of machining brass, and 4–5 times the cost of a POM fitting that can be made by injection molding.

On the other hand, the cost of machining 304 is more acceptable in manufacturing processes like downstem tube bending, hydroforming, laser cutting, and TIG welding. For large volume manufacturing, processes such as deep drawing can be done with stainless tubing and minimal post-processing can be done to ensure that the tube meets the final dimension, as is the case for the Moze Breeze Pro. Surface Finishing Options

There are several stainless steel finish options in the production of hookah components.

Brass: The Traditional Premium with Modern Considerations

Brass has been the traditional material of choice for hookah manufacturing for centuries, particularly in Middle Eastern and South Asian production centers. A polished brass hookah communicates craftsmanship, weight, and heritage in a way that stainless steel or plastic cannot replicate. Brass hookahs are heavy and reflect the craftsmanship of premium solid construction, herring value, and storage value. However, its role in the modern B2B landscape reflects the traditional craftsmanship.

The temperature conductivity of brass is both a positive and a negative when it comes to the design of a hookah. A brass downstem will conduct heat from the hookah bowls area quicker than stainless, which will change the smoke temperature profile. Some traditionalists may prefer the change. In a lounge environment, the stem will get too hot to handle after extended sessions.

Brass is still subject to corrosion. Because of the constituent of zinc, it is subject to dezincification, which is the selective corrosion process of zinc leaching out of the alloy, resulting in a porous and copper dominated structure, which dramatically decreases mechanical strength. The combination of the pH 4 – 5 tobacco juices with long-term moisture contact and residual cleaning agents causes dezincification brass with 15% or more zinc content. That means C36000 (35 – 37% Zn) is moderately susceptible, and C26000 (30 – 35% Zn) is more susceptible.

Mitigations include lacquer coating (the most common factory approach), nickel or chrome plating, and the use of inhibited brass (with trace arsenic, antimony, or phosphorus additions that suppress dezincification). For B2B buyers: if you are sourcing bare polished brass hookah components, request a dezincification resistance test per ISO 6509 or ASTM B858. A quality factory will provide this test if you ask.

Machinability & Cost

With brass, you can machine with the lowest possible cost.  Eodic reported that 304 stainless steel scores 45/100, meaning it is 2.25 times easier to machine than 304 stainless steel, while POM scores around 75 to 90 (though POM is usually injection molded, and not machined.) With brass, tools can be broken with standard tools, and the costs of CNC are significantly decreased.

The balance costs of utilizing brass over stainless steel, which costs double per kilo. This is largely due to the amount of copper in the alloy (65-70% on average.) The high cost of copper can also make the cost of brass alloy increase, but due to the high value of brass recycling, this cost can lower a lot. The cost of brass can also be lower than the cost of steel, due to the value of brass over stainless steel scrap.

Polyacetal (POM): The Engineering Plastic Game Changer

Polyacetal (POM) is the engineering thermoplastic that’s been gaining traction in the hookah industry over the last 10 years. Originally produced as a low-friction, stiff, metal replacement in car and industrial components (gears, bushings, bearings) Polyacetal (POM) has a unique property profile that helps bridge certain gaps within the hookah industry while remaining low cost.

Chemical Resistance and Safety in Food

POM shows high resistance to many types of chemicals at room temperature, including aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters, and dilute acids. They include the main constituents of hookah tobacco juice (glycerin, propylene glycol, and flavoring components, including terpenes, esters, and ketones). Strong acids and bases, as well as phenols and prolonged contact with hot water above 80 °C, cause swelling and cracking of POM, but these conditions are not typical and do not occur during the normal use of hookahs.

POM also covers an important aspect of B2B customers. It is FDA-compliant with food contact and does not need any additional coating or surface treatment for food safety. Therefore, it removes a step in the manufacturing process and one point of potential failure. POM is naturally UV stable (copolymer grades) and POM is resistant to stress cracking. The Chinese brass hookah components depend on the large copper-processing center in Jiangxi province, and secondary processing in Zhejiang (Yongkang area). The copper prices quoted on the SHFE also depend on international copper pricing. The major risk in brass supply chain is inconsistent alloy composition, as some smaller manufacturers used recycled brass with unregulated zinc, high lead (over the RoHS threshold of 1,000 ppm) and other impurity materials that lead to dezincification. POM Supply Chain

The global supply of POM resins is concentrated between a few major players: DuPont (Delrin), Celanese (Hostaform/Celcon), BASF (Ultraform), and Mitsubishi (Iupital). Compared to these companies, the Chinese producers Yunnan Yuntianhua and BlueStar offer lower-assurance copolymer grades that are appropriate for most hookah applications. The primary QC concern for POM injection molding is moisture: POM resin is hygroscopic, so if it is not dried to less than 0.15% moisture before molding, it will introduce voids and surface flaws and will reduce the part’s mechanical strength.
